Welcome to the musical homestead of Vernam and Connie Cipher, who’ve been playing and singing together for more than 10 years on what Dad jokingly dubbed “The Planned Obsolescence Tour.” Connie gets the last laugh now that the prophecy has been self-fulfilled: She’s all grown up and stealing the show.
SCAPEGOATIN’. Connie and Vernam had a wicked blast on Friday, September 8, playing at an extremely cool new spot, the Scapegoat Lounge at 10 S 656 Kingery Highway (Route 83) in Willowbrook. Thanks to everyone who came out and especially to the club’s co-owner Beth — who turns out to be a big Loretta Lynn fan — and crew for being so supportive of us and music in general.
THREE FARM GIGS. Autumn is here, but the Ciphers still have a few outdoor gigs left! We will return to the Downers Grove Farmers’ Market on Saturday, September 23, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. And we’ve also been asked back to Geneva’s Windy Acres Farm on the Saturdays of October 7 and 14, from noon to 5:00 p.m. Enjoy the beauty of harvest season at a kid-friendly spot that’s loaded with fun activities.
FAREWELL, GAB. Since Connie wasn’t even 10, we’ve enjoyed playing at Great American Bagel in Westmont and Western Springs. Some of Dad’s favorite memories are of little girls who watched infascination as our girl did her thing. Now she and they are all grown up and the Bagel management has decided to discontinue its songwriters’ showcase, so on April 30 we had the sad privilege of being the last people to perform there, at least for a while. Thanks to Andrea and other staff who gave us dozens of chances to play there, letting Connie hone her skills from such an early age.
CAR NIGHT. The singin’ Ciphers performed at our very favorite
summertime venue, the Downers Grove Classic Car Night on Friday, June 9.
