Before I get down to business, a few idle thoughts about tonight's Grammys.  First, it was great seeing Leon Russell with someone called Zac Brown.  Second, their performance notwithstanding, must every pop song now have that enormous "We Are the Champions" drum sound?  Fake excitement seems to have replaced the real kind.  And third, during the Michael Jackson tribute, I couldn't believe they made all the stars wear those crummy cardboard 3D glasses with no bling.

Anyway, to the point:  Vernam will be playing at John's in Winfield on Saturday, February 6, from 9:00 p.m. to about 12:30 a.m. with Bob Stoppenbach on guitar.  What can I say?  John's is my favorite place to play, because the owners, staff, and customers are so supportive.  Even the lady who always used to request "Roundabout" by Yes, she was actually supportive in her own way.

We won't be playing that tune (no matter how often or loudly you ask), but Bob and I will have some other songs, many of them new ones. Here's a joint called "Trifling Woman" that I wrote recently and have been experimenting with "in the studio," aka "my recliner in the living room," which now is home to more recording technology (if not know-how) than Abbey Road was circa 1967.  The track probably isn't ready for prime time, but what the heck, I'm not getting any younger, you know?

Oh, I almost forgot:  CIPHERDOM has a new website.  Same URL (www.cipherdom.com), but a different platform so it's a lot easier to add/update content.  Click the calendar for other upcoming gigs in February, March, and April.  Check out the mp3 player.  Not bad.  I set the whole site up myself.  When I probably should've been writing songs.  Or recording songs.  Or booking gigs.  Imagine I'm 24 instead of 51, and you'll get some idea why the music biz has declined -- it's too much like work!

Bob's "other" band, the Tonellis, played a great show two weeks ago at Durty Nellie's in Palatine.  Click here for some videos.  We'll probably shoot some at John's, too, just because we can.  It'll be nice to document that moment when I wig out because someone requests "Pants On the Ground."  ;^)

Be seeing you,

Vernam
